Telehealth (telephone) follow-up visits

With the coronavirus-related state of emergency in Virginia expiring June 30, 2021, we will continue to offer telehealth follow-up visits to appropriate patients through July 31, 2021

What is Telehealth?

Telehealth refers to the practice of caring for patients remotely when the patient and healthcare provider are not physically present with each other.  Our office is offering telephone follow-up visits for patients who are already established with the practice.

Who is Eligible for Telephone Follow-up Visits?

If you are an established patient of the practice, you are eligible for telephone follow-up visits.  New Patient visits are not eligible but you can do telephone follow-up visits after your 1st visit.

What Is Needed for a Telephone Visit?

For a telehealth follow up visit you must be calling from within the state of Virginia and will need the following:

  • Telephone: any type of phone including a smartphone or landline

  • Body Weight Measurement: ideally with a digital scale measuring your first morning, fasting weight, after using the bathroom, before the shower, unclothed or minimally clothed.  This is considered your "morning dry weight" which is the most accurate, reliable, and comparable weight of the day (your weight naturally increases as the day goes on).  Scroll down below for resources for body weight measurements and scales.

  • Blood Pressure Measurement: this may or may not be required if you are on phentermine, diethylpropion, phendimetrizine, or Qsymia.  Scroll down below for resources for blood pressure measurements and home blood pressure machines

Medications and Refills

If you are prescribed any medications during your telephone visit these prescriptions will be sent electronically to the pharmacy of your choosing at the conclusion of your visit.

Labs

If you need labs drawn, your provider will send a lab slip directly to the LabCorp draw station or other lab of your choice.

Blood Pressure Monitoring Directions and Resources

Blood Pressure Monitoring Directions (American Heart Association)

When obtaining a home blood pressure reading, please use the following technique as recommended by the American Heart Association (see link here): Instructions for "Monitoring Your Blood Pressure at Home"

  • Be Still.  Don't smoke, drink caffeinated beverages, or exercise within 30 minutes before measuring your blood pressure.  Empty your bladder and ensure at least 5 minutes of quiet rest before measurements.

  • Sit Correctly.  Sit in a firm chair with your back straight and supported. Your feet should be flat on the floor and your legs should not be crossed.

  • For a traditional upper arm cuff: your arm should be supported on a flat surface (such as a table) with your upper arm at the level of your heart.  Make sure the bottom of the cuff is placed directly above the bend of your elbow.

  • For a wrist cuff: apply the wrist device.  Keep your elbow on a table or desk with your forearm bent.   Place your wrist up at the level of your heart.  Keep your arm relaxed and your hand resting against your body.  Measure your wrist blood pressure without moving your arm while in the seated position.  Click this link to the AMA (American Medical Association) on using a wrist cuff and proper positioning.

  • Take multiple readings and record the results. Each time you measure, take 2 readings one minute apart  and record the results.  Please also record your heart rate / pulse if it is displayed on the monitor.

  • Don't take the measurement over clothes
